The Road Less Travelled by Gillie and Marc Schattner

10th - 26th February 2011 at 123 Hay St Subiaco

Opening Thursday 10th February at 7.00pm with guest speaker and fellow award winning Australian artist Helen Norton in attendance, Linton and Kay Contemporary is proud to present this exhibition featuring new forays into the vivid imagery and healthy controversy which has gained Marc and Gillie Schattner world-wide recognition.

Archibald Prize Finalists, this husband and wife team paint, draw and design sculptures based upon their observations of happiness with previous work depicting people and animals juxtaposed with landscapes and inanimate everyday objects.
The Road Less Travelled see’s Marc and Gillie utilise their trademark dog/human hybrids in reference their own remarkable love story, perpetuating a pursuit of happiness and encouraging us to challenge the status quo and the perceived safety of societal convention.
20 years ago the artists married in the foothills of Nepal’s Mt Everest, 15 days after having met in Hong Kong. English born and African bred Gillie and the Australian Marc took as a maxim Robert Frost’s famous poem ‘The Road Less Travelled’ and have been exploring, adventuring and painting together ever since.

The Road Less Travelled presents metaphors of travel with thought provoking titles referencing personal growth and notions of the chase. Marc and Gillie’s ideologies are represented through endearing portrayals of dog and rabbit protagonists who are seen taking chances in life and on each other and having the confidence to go down the road that feels right for them.
Exhibiting their striking take on the human condition extensively across the globe, these collaborators in life and l’arte throw a metaphoric curve ball through their depictions of the raw joy, personal satisfaction and also loneliness that comes with choosing to negotiate your own path through this world… reminding us that life is a journey and happiness is always a stick worth chasing.

“I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference”
Robert Frost

Internationally acclaimed artists Marc and Gillie Schattner bound into town with one of the most exciting and highly anticipated exhibitions of 2011

Marc and Gillie Schattner believe in the ability of art to change opinions, attitudes and lives.
In keeping with their commitment to instigating change, they wish to raise awareness for the
Dogs Refuge Home through the promotion of this exhibition.
Established in 1935, the Dog’s Refuge Home is W.A.’s oldest animal welfare organisation, relying
solely upon donations from the public to operate as they receive no government support.
Located in Shenton Park, Perth, they re-home over 700 dogs every year – dogs that would otherwise be euthanised or still living under appalling conditions.
Maintaining a ‘no kill’ policy, the Dogs Refuge Home ensures no animal in their care is ever euthanised on economic grounds and believes that every dog deserves the same love and respect they unconditionally give us.

New Years Day

Enjoying Rambutans on in Ubud, Monkey Forest, Happy New Year and Enjoy !

It was quite amazing visiting the monkey farm in Ubud and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take a photo! The little monkeys looked cute but they were really very cheeky!
